Last night students from all over Scotland met at the Edinburgh Filmhouse to showcase their European films in front of an audience consisting of representatives from European Parliament, Scottish Government, the European Commission, Creative Scotland, NUS and Young Scot.
The Our Europe film competition is an innovative project run by SEET (Scottish European Educational Trust), funded by the European Parliament and Scottish Government and supported by Radio Lingua. Teams from all secondary schools in Scotland were invited to take part in this competition with the opportunity of winning an iPad for their school and a trip to Brussels. Teams were asked to create a short film to raise awareness of the positive impact of the European Parliament on the lives of young people in the EU. The competition was organised in three stages and has been designed to offer young people the opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of Europe, develop their technology skills, increase their use of European languages, and gain a range of transferable skills through the creative process.
Above: Rhys, Emily, Milosz and Shannon from St. Margaret’s Academy touch on a range of topics including fair trade laws as well as work and study abroad opportunities in their video. They discuss these issues in English, Spanish, French and Polish throughout the film. Emily states that “the competition allowed us to all learn new language skills from each other. By having a native Polish speaker in our group it was very interesting to see the way he perceived language and made me think about how I constructed sentences in French.”
All six semi-finalist films can be viewed online at:
The two finalist teams from Bearsden Academy and Douglas Academy will be going to Brussels next week to visit the European Parliament and compete in the final stage of the competition.
