Euroquiz Final 2023

Congratulations to pupils from St Margaret’s RC Primary School (City of Edinburgh) who won the Scottish European Educational Trust’s National Euroquiz Final 2023, which took place at the McEwan Hall today. After an exciting final buzzer round, pupils from Houston Primary School (Renfrewshire) took 2nd place. Pupils from St Barbara’s Primary School in North Lanarkshire followed very closely behind in 3rd place.

Well done to all pupils who reached the National Final stage of Euroquiz 2023. In total, over 550 schools participated in this year’s Euroquiz heats, directly involving more than 2,750 pupils. This is the highest participation in the history of Euroquiz, with more pupils and schools taking part than ever before. The finalists were put through their paces by our Quizmaster, Mark Pentleton, from Coffee Break Languages. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all pupils working as a team and learning all about languages, places, history, people (and more!) across Europe and the wider world.

Professor Kim Graham, University of Edinburgh Provost, welcomed pupils to the McEwan Hall:

“We were delighted to be able to host this year’s Euroquiz final at the University of Edinburgh. Well done to all of the teams from across Scotland who took part.”

Jenny Gilruth MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills shared a message for the pupils:

“My congratulations to the schools that have reached this year’s Euroquiz National Final.

Euroquiz continues to be a fantastic opportunity for young people in Scotland to develop valuable team working skills, expand their cultural outlook and improve their proficiency in other languages, as they learn about the fascinating history and cultures of our European partners.

I would like to wish the best of luck to everyone taking part in today’s final, and I hope you all have an exciting and educational day.”

Thank you to our main sponsors for this year’s project, the Scottish Government, the James T Howat Charitable Trust, Fieldfisher LLP, Thomas Tunnock Ltd, the Faculty of Advocates, as well as generous individual donors. We are also grateful for support from partner organisations and local authorities in the preparation for the Euroquiz heats and Final. Local authority heat coordinators play a crucial role in enabling schools across Scotland to take part in Euroquiz, and we thank you all for your support. The Final today has been a wonderful opportunity to celebrate everyone who supports SEET in making Euroquiz possible.

It is a particularly special year for Euroquiz and SEET, as we are celebrating our 30th birthday as a charity. We are proud to celebrate 30 years of creating opportunities for primary and secondary school pupils across Scotland to build the skills, knowledge and confidence to look outward and to engage with other countries, cultures and languages. As a result, we will be engaging with schools in the form of ‘multilingual days’ to raise awareness for the fantastic language learning taking place in classrooms all over the country! If you’d like to get involved, you can visit our website and search for Multilingual Day 2023.
